Prince Olyvar Nymeros of House Martell, the Sun Ascendant
“I am an Orphan, now, in both ways-- bereft of both Mother and Rhoyne. Yet, I am no longer the son, now. I am the father, and all of Dorne is my child.”
…Did you feel this pain as well, Nymeria?”
---
Two-hundred and eighty-three years after Aegon’s Conquest, a child was born to Prince Trystane and Princess Maia of the House Nymeros Martell. He was named Olyvar, and would be the youngest of two children, his elder sister Lorzea preceding his birth by four years.
As the “spare” to his sister’s “heir,” Olyvar’s youth would be spent romping about Sunspear and the Water Gardens, the boy taking an odd reverence for water, and his Rhoynar ancestry. Occasionally joining his sister in her lessons (albeit at a mildly reduced rate for his age), Olyvar eventually took a liking to his numbers and House Martell’s finances-- moreso than his sister, in fact-- and gained a liking for tales of the past, especially those of Dorne, and the Rhoyne. With all that, alongside the tranquil peace of his family life, his parents happily wed and his sister doting and loving, Olyvar’s youth echoed that tranquil peace.
As the boy grew into a youth, as boys were want to do, Olyvar took to learning the way of the sword, becoming proficient in the use of a castle-forged longsword he affectionately dubbed Sandstorm, and occasionally mock-sparring with his Blackmont cousins. In that same vein, Olyvar took an interests in Dorne’s naval matters, dreaming of Nymeria’s ten-thousand and he watched Sunspear’s harbour from atop the Old Palace. This especially rang true when the Tyroshi Deliverance broke out, and his father sailed away to war alongside the Ironborn on the Old King’s behalf. Olyvar would spend much of his free time atop the Sun Tower, looking out to see and waiting for his father’s return.
(Often, he did not do it alone. His sister joined him in his vigil, and his mother, when she had the time. It was a light in that uncertain time, and Olyvar would always look back fondly on it.)
Eventually, Prince Trystane returned, alive and well, and life for Olyvar, now ten, went on.
However, as time went on, and both children grew, it became increasingly clear to Olyvar’s parents that Lorzea little wish to inherit Dorne, let alone rule it. And so, although it was never officiated, for Trystane and Maia loved their daughter as much as they did their son, and would not set her aside, Olyvar began to take part in more and more important lessons alongside Lorzea-- and then, eventually, without her. As Lorzea more often than not began to shirk her duties as the future Princess of Dorne, more content in adventuring the deserts of Dorne and beyond, Olyvar found himself taking on more and more of an heir’s tasks-- and though he welcomed doing what he could for Dorne, it took a tole on the boy, something that did not go unnoticed by his parents.
When Olyvar’s five-and-tenth nameday came upon him, the youth was asked (read: commanded) by his parents to rest, and travel. “Go, and see Dorne,” they told him. “See this land you work so hard to help. Learn to know the desert, learn to swim the Greenblood. Rest, Olyvar.”
So, he did.
He would set out, the next day, with naught but a Rhoynish steed, Sandstorm, a bag of gold, and Lorzea (who had insisted on accompanying him a ways on his progress), the youth set out. Dorne was a peace-- on land, at least-- and the roads were bereft of brigands, safe to travel. So, Olyvar traveled, as his sister did-- and, eventually, his path took him to the Greenblood. There, he would spend the next two years living amongst a confederation of Orphans, who took him in as he found his way. Thrice during those years would Olyvar depart to go home, twice in 297, and one in 298 for the tourney in King’s Landing, where he would meet his cousin Myriah Sand for the first time.
The year later, however, would be little more than unwanted news. Olyvar had scarcely returned to his foster-family in the Greenblood when word would reach him of his mother’s, then his father’s, passing. His mother, the message spoke, had passed first, simply not waking up one day. His father, who quickly lost lost the will to live, soon followed.
Olyvar scarcely had time to mourn their loss and prepare to go home permanently before he young man was promptly approached by two-hundred horse of his father’s Household Guard, to escort him back to Sunspear and crown him Prince of Dorne-- for his sister, in the aftermath of their parents’ death, had disappeared from Sunspear leaving naught but a written letter instructing that Olyvar take her place in-perpetuity. It would later be discovered that she had stolen away on a ship to King’s Landing, to stay.
“You will serve Dorne better than I will,” Lorzea had written, and Olyvar had not know whether to thank his sister, curse her, or weep-- for he was an orphan now, in every sense of the word, bereft of mother and father and sister and Rhoyne.
But, it mattered not. For he was the father now, and all of Dorne his child.
And he would do right by it.
