Biography

Joramun of Magnar - Lord of All Skagos and Skane

There were no bells to herald his arrival into the world, no crowd of courtiers and nobles awaiting word of his birth.

Instead, Joramun’s first breath was heralded by his mother’s last, 368 years After Conquest, born to Alaric and Freyja of House Magnar, the first and only child of the two. And, though they would never grow to know each other, Alaric would do his best to make it known that Freyja loved Joramun with all her heart, never blaming his son for his mother’s passing. With his mother gone, and his father refusing to wed again, Joramun would be left to be raised by his father and his nursemaid, Ylfa, someone who would increasingly be seen as the young Magnarerfingi 1 as a surrogate mother.

Even as the heir to over a thousand years of proud history, the SkaggofĂŠddur 2 way of life was not an easy one by any measure. Alaric taught his son in the ways of his father, and his father before him, in the best way he knew how. House Magnar could afford no weakness, for the weak had no place on Skagos. Life on the island was a savage one, far removed from the more Andalized mainland of the North. The SkaggofĂŠddur had never forgotten the Old Ways, though the SkĂłgarbörn 3 had long since left the island. They kept to the ancient rites, celebrated the old ceremonies, and gave the gods their due. And Joramun, as his father and his father’s father did before him, absorbed the customs and ways of his people like a breadloaf would water.

And so Joramun grew, learning to wield the axe and the sword, as well as the ways of the seas-- for though the Starks had forbade them from taking to the waters of Skagos, what punishment would they bring from their graves? House Stark was dead, and so to was Skagos’ fealty to the mainland, so far as Joramun’s father was concerned.

The year of 387 AC was a time of mourning for Joramun, for it was in those days that his father departed the realms of men for the Great Mjöðsalur 4, joining Freyja in blissful death, body burned in the ancient traditions. And, though Joramun wept for his father, he ascended, then, to the throne of the Kinghouse, where all of Skagos knelt before him and pledge fealty. It was there, on the stone throne of his ancestors, Joramun was hailed Magnar of Magnar, Lord of All Skagos and Skane.

Joramun’s reign over Skagos and Skane was, thankfully, an uncontested one-- House Magnar had been paramount on the island since time immemorial, and both the Crowls and Stanes saw little need to usurp the Stone Throne, content with their lot and their leader. Though, that faith would be tested naught but three years later.

In 390 AC, a group of two-dozen wildlings from beyond the Wall, adrift on a barely-afloat raft, washed ashore on Skagos, with the intention to seek refuge from a blood feud that had resulted in the annihilation of most of their tribe. To the fortune of the remaining clansmen of the Snjórfljóte tribe, they were greeted not by hostile Skaggoféddur, as had always been the norm when wildlings dared to tread on the island, but by a tired Joramun, who had been overseeing the construction of several new ships where they had washed ashore. To Joramun’s surprise, they fell to their knees before him, exhausted from their flight, and begged sanctuary amongst his people. And, though with much apprehension, Joramun agreed to do so, on the account that they pledge fealty to him and his.

From an early age, his father had taught him of Winter’s hardships. No man could survive such a thing alone. Only together, working to keep the home warm and the hearth burning, could they triumph. And Joramun, for all his cunning and ambition, was no cruel King of old. All who dwelled on Skagos were his people, and as such, it was his duty to see them protected. Thus, Joramun took the Snjórfljóte tribe under his protection, and returned to the Kinghouse with two-dozen more men and women than he left. And, for half a year, all seemed well. The wildlings integrated, followers of the Old Ways just as much as the Skaggoféddur were, and loyal to their new chieftain. They worked the land alongside the people they now called neighbors. Ate with then, prayed with them, bedded them, in several cases. One of their own, Srelly Thovaldóttir, would even attempt to “steal” Joramun himself, though it was a stealing well received by the Magnar of Magnar, who would go on to marry Srelly the following day before a Weirwood, in accordance with the Old Way.

It was only when, in 391 AC, a makeshift flotilla of two-hundred wildlings attempted to finish their blood feud against the SnjĂłrfljĂłte tribe, now men and women of House Magnar, did Joramun truly have the chance to prove his martial spirit. Rallying the thegns and thanes of his House, the Magnar of Magnar drove the wildlings back into the sea, sinking their rafts and slaying their champion in the melee.

Then, after ensuring the safety of Skagos during his absence, Joramun set sail for the lands beyond the wall with ten ships, the naval might of Skagos and Skane at his back. There, he set about avenging his wife’s people upon those that had sought to bring blood and death to his lands, driving the enemy tribe from the territory they had claimed deeper into the True North, claiming the skull of their chieftain during the process.

Having proven his skill as both a warrior and a warlord, Joramun returned home to the Kinghouse, his time away having given him many an idea. Having seen the near-ruined glory of Eastwatch-By-The-Sea and the Wall, and aspiring to see his people do not go down that same path, he turns his eyes towards Skane, uninhabited since the Feast, yet teeming with sea-worthy wood and many more resources yet unknown to him. However, his plans are put on hold when word of the Bleeding reaches Skagos, and he turns his attention from territorial expansion to the needs of Skagos’ naval might, seeking to rebuild what was taken by the Starks.

When word reached him of the escalation of tensions between the Sistermen and the Vale, Joramun, with great reluctance, came to the conclusion that, with a conflict so close to home brewing, Skagos might be the target of an enemy navy. So, in tandem with the naval buildup of House Magnar, Joramun began to seek a way to bridge the gap between the Kinghouse and White Harbor, and when word arrives of Galladon’s Royal Wake, the Magnar sets sail from King’s Landing with his household, to set to rest the rumors of war in the Bite once and for all...

Supporting Characters

Srelly of Magnar (Warrior - Axes)

A wildling woman, wed to Joramun of Magnar. A wife who cares deeply for her husband, just as much as he cares for her. Though born beyond the Wall, where warring is constant, Srelly is a woman tired of conflict, save when the need arises, having fled the True North when her tribe was annihilated in a blood feud.

Ivar Stallion-Speaker (Master-at-Arms)

Aðalvörður of the Magnar household, it is to Ivar that the huskarls of House Magnar report to. A proven warrior during the blood feud, Ivar prefers tending to the horses of Kinghouse' stables, earning him the name Stallion-Speaker. One of the few SkaggofÊddur who prefers riding over sailing.

Heisi, the Guðsrödd (Medic)

Though the GrÊnnmenn and their seers have long since left the North, their acolytes have not. The Guðsrödd of Skagos, or the Voice of the Gods, have kept to the ancient practices that even the North have forgotten.

Presiding over all religious matters concerning House Magnar, the Guðsrödd of Magnar is one of three on Skagos, the other two belonging to House Crowl and Stane--and, in theory, is one amongst equals. Due to House Magnar's paramountcy over Skagos, however, the Guðsrödds of Crowl and Stane defer to her in all things.

Olvir StĂĄlhryggur (Warrior - Swords)

Once the Aðalvörður to the old Magnar Alarick, Olvir is a warrior tried and true, and one of the few remaining old enough to remember the tales of House Stark's twilight. Though he no longer leads the huskarls of House Magnar, Olvir instead chooses to spend his time training the youth of Skagos in the tungumål sverðsins, and imparting advice and wisdom on to Magnar Joramun. Only when the thanes and thegns of Skagos are summoned to war does Olvir once more unsheathe his sword and don his armor to serve his Magnar.
