What skills or resume items should I be working on now as I try to make my way up to C level?
Post Body

Background:

I'm currently "IT Director" for a small (non-profit) company. I have a few direct reports, and oversee a few contractors. I also 'advise' the IT teams at our children entities (they don't report to me in any way). I still do some technical work-mostly advice, a few hours a week hands on.

Being a small company (~150 employees), I also have a small budget (1.3 this year-though it goes a bit further being a non-profit than it would otherwise). The other two directors (HR and Finance) are in their 50's, and likely here until retirement. There is no upward trajectory for me here. I'm here because it's my first real 'management' position, and the work environment is good-allowing me to work on my MBA at a nearby university (good, but not well known enough to be any guarantee of employment on its own).

Summary:

When I'm done with my MBA (two more years) I'll be wanting out of here and out of this industry. What remains to do is accomplish as much as possible for this company while I'm still here, and increase my marketability as I do so.

Possible ideas:

The one thing I know I lack in this company is networking opportunities. I really have no contact with other IT managers, or CIOs, or people I could learn from/share with. I also have no contact with people that might want to hire me down the road. When I was a sysadmin I used to drop in to LUGs, but that's not relevant anymore. What are my options here?

I know that PCI can be big; and while on paper we are compliant, I know we don't meet those standards-I'm hoping to tackle that next year (with some contracted help).

I'm trying to expand IT services into some areas (data analytics, web development) that our children entities are wanting, but I'm not sure if I'll win that political battle.

There's all the usual tech stuff of course, increase performance, decrease costs, yadda yadda...

TL;DR: What skills in or out of the office should I be working on (alongside my MBA) to be on track for C level in ~15 years.
