So I’m pretty new into the workforce [25M]. I had to struggle to get internships during my last few years of uni and on one occasion was even laid off from a coop position due to covid before I even began working. Needless to say I’m quite jaded and figured out early on that most companies absolutely do not give af about you. I’m now in a sysadmin role that’s fully remote and part of a union. Pay is excellent in a MCOL area, my work life balance is extremely favorable, I have little to no stress in my job, and I have the freedom to develop whatever technical skills that aren’t a part of my job during work hours. Whatever certifications I want are paid for by my company. Recently I’ve been speaking a lot with family friends who are much older than me in their late 40s and 50s who are in manager and director level positions. Often the discussions and advice they give seem so delusional to me. They’ll often say how being in the office is the only way they trust their employees to get work done, how they’re so passionate about the work they do and how being loyal to a single company is the way to go. I feel odd now because I literally could care less about the company I work for. At the end of the day it’s just a paycheck for me and I’ll always have one foot out the door. I refuse now to accept a position that’s not completely remote and I’m looked at like I’m insane by them. Im left wondering now if it’s just me who feels this way. Let me know your thoughts.
