How long were you in a helpdesk role before going sysadmin?

Post Body

As the title says... Just trying to get a gauge on my career goals over the next few years. I just turned 23, and this is my 3rd year working in a helpdesk/desktop support role, at my 3rd company (moved around a bit the past couple of years).

Anyway, I recently picked up a new helpdesk role after moving to a new city. It's a similar position to what i've had in the past, essentially end-user desktop support. However, I feel that I am getting a bit tired of this role/position.

Ideally I'd see myself going the sysadmin route, but it's obviously hard to get there without getting a junior sysadmin job or being promoted from a helpdesk role.

Anyway. How long were you a helpdesk tech, and what did you do afterwards? If you went the sysadmin route, how long did it take you to get there?

What other kinds positions might be worth checking out?

Thanks!
