When I say âwhat feels like nothingâ: I have used computers for my entire life and have a relatively decent understanding of how to use and troubleshoot one, but I have no experience nor certifications. I believe I got the job by sheer luck as the company did not have any one with IT knowledge or experience and was hesitant to accept the offer at first, but could not turn down the opportunity.
Now I am response for everything from support to cybersecurity and there is no budget to grow the team at the moment. I realize I bit off more than I can chew, though I plan on trying my best and learning as much as I can while I have the opportunity.
Iâve done my best to manage expectations without outright admitting that I am an imposter. Thankfully, my boss and job are understanding of the scope of the undertaking and do not mind when things take a bit longer than anticipated, but if nothing changes, it is only a matter of time until I am outed. The organization currently has 40 employees with plans of growing and âwill hire more IT staff when that time comesâ. Realistically, this growth wonât occur for 3 to 6 months, so I have until then to get a grip on things.
I started studying for the A shortly before starting the job, but decided it would be best to use the study book as a reference when providing support after starting. I am now leaning towards studying for and taking the ITIL as a relative with IT experience suggested I focus on operations, technology, and support (in that order).
Where should I begin? Where should I focus my efforts? Any recommendations for prioritizing tasks and keeping track of everything?
