Shaping my Career Path Beyond VoIP Telecom
Post Body

I'm reaching out for some friendly advice as I make my way into the world of IT. Just recently, I started a technical support role at a VoIP Telecom company – a significant step for someone like me who doesn't come from a professional IT background and hasn't obtained any certifications just yet.

I'm currently studying CompTIA A materials to work my way towards that certification. On top of that, my position here has even introduced me to some Net training materials, which I'm finding pretty engaging and of course it builds on to stuff I've already recently learned. I'm also looking at equipment to get my homelab set up once I get on my feet financially.

Though I'm truly grateful for the chance to enter the industry this way and dip my toes into the VoIP side of things, I've discovered I would prefer to work in desktop support and the whole hands-on side of computers and operating systems. I find the technical aspects of my role intriguing, but I don't find myself getting very excited over bussiness phones and call center software. This VoIP role isn't exactly the long-term plan I've got in mind.

My long-term career vision is still a work in progress. Right now, I'm leaning towards roles like SysAdmin, Network Admin, Data Center Technician, or something down the Cyber Security avenue. But I know I need some solid experience under my belt to make those ambitions come true.

So, here's where I could use some insights from all you experienced folks. If any of you have been in a similar spot, especially early on in your IT journeys, I'd love to hear your thoughts. How can I make the most of my current role, even though it's not exactly in line with my main interest? Will I mostly need to rely on my homelab to show relevant skills, or does Telecom offer chances to show off transferable skills?

Thanks a ton for your input, I'm looking forward to doing exciting things in this field!
