Can someone give me the steps to learn IT without certs?

So I took about 3 months of cyber security in college. (Didn’t have a teacher) and I don’t want to end up down that road where I’m paying too dollar just to not actually be taught by a teacher so what are some of the stepping stones to learning cyber security? I’m also going to the military soon and want this to be my profession.
