New to IT and questioning my future in it
Post Body

Just to give some background information: I graduated at the end of 2022 with a degree in Computer Science & Information Security, my only motivation for getting into this field was money. However, despite the promising syllabus, I felt that the degree lacked coherence and direction.

Nevertheless I started applying for jobs in software development and entry level IT (tech support, helpdesk, etc.). Took me a couple of months but I finally got a job as tech support and I started it with the intention of using this job as a springboard into cybersecurity. However as time has gone on I have realized that that end goal no longer motivates me. I still do my job well, I handle my tickets on time and my supervisors have nothing but praise for me (might be because I'm still new though) but as soon as I get home I'm searching for software engineering jobs and looking at masters degrees.

My main issue is that nothing at work really gives me the high of problem solving like I used to get with coding. I know that tech support is mostly busy work but I can't help but feel like every problem I will encounter in the field of IT will be a case of "don't know it? just google it" I'm not saying that the jobs aren't easy (I have seen all the CERTS people get) but just that the feeling of working around or resolving a bug won't be replicated in such work. Also, all my coworkers are much older than me, I'm 20 years old and they have kids older than me. This isn't a real issue, I love learning from them and taking in their wisdom but it feels like my life is over before it even started when I am surrounded by people who are about to get pension.

I feel like if give up focusing on cybersecurity and go all in on software engineering/development I would be much more fulfilled but at the same time I don't want to step out of a safe job for rough waters in tech.

I just want some advice from people who have been in the same position.
