So my dad is in a weird situation and this is due to him doing everything last minute. For the last two years, he's been getting a very small refund on his taxes but still got them. When he requested information as to why it was much smaller than what was requested, he was told it was because his SS# was inactive (was told this in November). But if his SS# was inactive, how was he able to file his taxes in the first place?
I posted about this before and was told that the letter might have been a scam cause it said "prime taxpayer" instead of "primary taxpayer". However, when I cross-checked the phone numbers with the numbers on the NYC Dept of Taxation, they matched.
I also wanted to know if this would affect his eligibility for receiving the stimulus check. He passes the rest of the criteria but the inactive SS# letter is what's worrying him.
