Just called the IRS for the first time. Kinda anxious.

Thank you in advance for any help.

For the first time in my working life, I cannot get my hands on a W2 from the 2023 tax year. I have contacted the company I worked for (HR and my boss) several times by email and phone since 2/1. I have received no communication or W2 from them.

Not knowing what to do at this point, I dialed (800) 829-1040 and waited. After being passed around a few times, I finally verified (parents names, my address, and ssn) with the right department.

After a few holds (3 in total) with her, she comes back sounding flustered and tells me the system they need to access to see what they need to see is down. I am told a supervisor will call me in the next 48.

I have no reason to fear the IRS. I am an uncomplicated case. I get my W2s and file. I get a return. I forget about taxes til next year.

I am a little nervous. I am unsure what the process is from here and was given no information. The system being down and a sup calling me feels strange.

Thanks again for an insight.

Right. This page is where I got the number I called earlier in my post.

Unless I am being obtuse, I have the option of calling (which I did and it prompted my post) or go to my local TIC? office. Called first since office is pretty far from me.

I do have every plan to go into the office if I don’t hear back from the supervisor. I mean, taxes will still be due even if they don’t call back.

The issue I address in my post is that I was asked to verify, then told the system was down after several holds and told a supervisor would call in 48 hours.

Is this a thing that happens to others? This is the first time in 14 years of filing I have ever spoken to them. Just trying to get some clarity.
