Nice story. I work for one of the main retailers in the Uk, in a small store during the night where we’re closed so most of all I do it get the delivery onto the shop floor, work it, clean up, face up/make it look pretty for opening time.
When I’m shopping in other supermarkets if I’m waiting on my friends/partner or whatever i start breaking up their cardboard and/or working their products onto the shelves if it’s night at a 24/h store, cause products shouldn’t be in the floor during the day.
Down the T&C biscuit/cake isle i was waiting for my partner and friends to decide what food they want and they were incredibly indecisive. The T&C side was full of products to be worked and no staff member was around the isle so bored, I started working their shit. Not to toot my own horn, I’m very fast at this and the 2nd fastest worker at my store. so quickly I worked half their entire isle before a staff member came over to find half of their job already done. They started thanking me telling me “shouldn’t you be working your own isle, are you new? You can’t be you worked so much!” to which I responded “oh, I don’t actually work here”. They were stunned.. “I could get in trouble if someone saw a random customer doing my job”.
I apologised profusely saying I was just bored, and she said it’s okay if anything thanks you very very much cause she has a cushy night.
Her: “If anyone asks, you didn’t do anything, thanks so much”
I went my separate ways with my friend, and now every time I see that staff member we’re basically besties :)

I can confirm such things. If you want to get ahead in retail, you either have to luck into management or be a Grade A USDA Choice asshole.
