Do my hours outside of the union increase my starting pay once I join?
Post Body

I’m really interested in joining the ibew but the only one close to me starts off at $13.50/hr. And I just had a baby so I couldn’t afford to live off that. I’ve been working at a non union shop for about a month that started me out at $15 but gave me a raise to $16.50 because I’ve learned fast. I was hoping that once I’ve had around 2000 hours of experience I would start out better then $13.50. I wouldn’t mind to take a pay cut to join the union but I would just need enough on my check to support my family

After the bills I’d have no money for food or diapers lol. And it’s not like I’m living above my means. I’m in a one bedroom apartment with a cheap car payment. 13.50 just isn’t enough anymore to pay the bills and support a fam

I don’t have healthcare right now lol, so nothing. I never visit the doctor, and my son is on free healthcare. I’m just kinda out here winging it, been healthy so far. And if I could start out at second year pay I would join without hesitation once I have the hours

Well I really hope that I can. I want to be in the union but the starting pay makes it hard to join for anyone trying to support a family on their own.

I mean it’s not terrible for the cost of living around here especially if it was someone just out of high school still with their parents. But I’m a grown man paying the bills, and the average rent around here just jumped up like crazy over the last year

It’s all good haha. It’s just funny how this dude is here to criticize and not actually help out with answers like the rest of the brothers on this thread. Y’all been a huge help and from what I understand the best thing to do in my situation is try to apply at 2000 or so hours.

Well I want in the union as soon as possible so I could start getting in class training too. So as soon as I’m at a rate that’s livable I want to reapply

Yeah that’s really helpful. I appreciate the advice brotha

Lmao I’m not making excuses to not join. The original thread was if I could transfer my hours. Who hurt you bro

Not everyone understands that and I get it. Even 5 years ago it was easily manageable. But rent here is up about 25% from just a year ago

None lmao. I don’t go to the doctor and my sons visits are free

3 an hour is about $500 a month. Quite a big difference.

U dropped zero knowledge and just told me to sacrifice to join the union 🤣 saying Im living above my means when you don’t even know my situation

I already said I have a one bedroom apartment and a cheap car. What else should I sacrifice lmao. Work everyday and never see my family til I get a decent pay grade, and ride a bike to work? You dot sound very union to me
