In 2009, I traded derivitives in the stock market (stock options) and tracked my trades. I made 107% return on a small account; I guess I'm a greedy bastard? AMA.

You can view the spreadsheet here

Things of note:

  • This was my first attempt at trading options
  • Therefore, this is my first time tracking trades
  • The most important columns on the first page is "End of Month Account Balance" and "YTD P/L"
  • The "Cash"-related columns are removed in my 2010 track, because they were ultimately useless. I have since switched to tracking "Account Balance" only (including unsold assets) which is more representative of my true success.
  • I didn't change any cash numbers, so this is what I actually have to my name to trade. I wanted people to see what can happen with small amounts of cash. The "Losing" numbers aren't entirely accurate because I didn't account for expired options; my 2010 sheet tracks these.
  • April was my best month, netting the majority of my gains last year (64%)
  • December was my worst month, losing 10%
  • I made 212 trades, mostly options, but some were stock
  • Started the year off with more-complex style trades (iron condors, verticals, strangles) but eventually moved into mostly straight calls and puts
  • I didn't start tracking return percentages until July or so, but my 2010 chart will have this all. I suppose I could go back and add it, but I'm that lazy.
  • I was (still am?) an options noob but I understand well the technicals. Feel free to constructively criticize, though!

(NOTE: My 2010 sheet will be available next year;). I'm up 17% this year so far.)

(NOTE2: The original .ODS file has pretty graphs...maybe someone wants to host the file? or recommend a place to upload)

Anyway, AMA
