Hi Reddit, I'm Will Joyce Jr, the COO of Joyce Van Lines Inc. I'm here today to talk about how to avoid moving scammers, brokers and best practices for vetting your moving company before you commit to a company to move all your possessions.

Here are a few basic tips to help you avoid moving scammers:

  • Get multiple quotes. Don't just go with the first moving company that you find. Get quotes from several different companies before making a decision.
  • Check the company's license and insurance. Make sure that the moving company is licensed and insured. You can check with your state's Department of Transportation to verify the company's license.
  • Get everything in writing. Before you hire a moving company, make sure to get everything in writing. This includes the estimate, the contract, and the insurance information.
  • Beware of high-pressure sales tactics. If a moving company is pressuring you to sign a contract right away, be wary. This is a sign that they may be trying to scam you.
  • Trust your gut. If you don't feel comfortable with a moving company, don't hire them. It's important to find a company that you feel comfortable with and that you can trust.
  • Verify they actually have assets. Truck count and driver count and miles traveled in the last year is available by checking the mover you are wishing to use and their company name.
  • Only ever put down a small deposit (under 10% of the move) and by credit card.
  • Only ever do a weight based move. NEVER DO CUBIC FEET. All of your rights to fight an overweight shipment are based around you witnessing a reweigh. To go over with cubic feet all that needs to be done is load the shipment poorly then after that you are out of recourse options.

Im happy to answer any other questions y'all have about anything in regards to Moving, Storage and Beyond.
