Hi all,
I am helping a friend replace the interior lights of his '09 Santa Fe with LED bulbs. Although I am a car enthusiast and work in IT with an electronics background, my car familiarity is more with domestics. I'm finding it hard to find the right information, even with using Bing Chat (ChatGPT). I have found looking for bulbs for a Ford or Mopar (Chrysler/Dodge) to be quite easily found in the manual or qith a quick google search, but not these.
I found various sources online and checked the manual, but the manual had the socket type not the bulb type.
I didn't want to go with an unknown brand, so I tried to find Sylvania or Philips, and looked at Helia also, I found xpressparts.ca had everything I needed at decent pricing (for the Philips Ultinon brand at least)
I purchased the following bulbs:
Map Lights: 1x 2 pack 921WLED (white colour 6000K) - 921 type 904/906/912/916 T10/T15 compatible
Luggage Compartment (Glove Compartment) and Dome Lights: 2x 6418WLED (white 6000K) - 6418 Festoon type bulb 12844/12854/DE3423/DE3425 compatible)
Trunk Lights: 2x DE3175WLED (white 6000K) DE3175 Festoon type 12818/DE3021/DE3022 compatible, I can't recall why I thought I needed 2 of these.
Anyways, I ordered the bulbs and picked up the next day and then installed then the following day and had the following issues:
I discovered that the 921 bulbs fit the socket but have too large a diametre and may be too long to actually fit, so I need a smaller size. Bing Chat suggested 194 type bulbs. Is this correct? Any idea why did all the information I find tell me 921 was correct?
The 6418 bulb fit perfectly in the dome light, but neither this bulb or the DE3175W would fit in the glove compartment, one was too long and the other too small and I could not read the markings on the existing bulb to verify it's size. Has the socket been stretched? Should I use pliers to make one of these bulb sizes fit, or should I get a bulb that fits? The DE3175 is 31mm x 10mm, the 6418 is 36mm x 11mm (width shouldn't be an issue, especially 1mm difference), and the suggested DE3425 is in between at 34mm x 10mm, which should fit based on what I saw trying to fit either the DE3175 or the 6418.
I did not find a trunk light, did I miss it?
Since then I realized there are vanity lights for the sun visors, which apparently are 6418 size, assuming this is correct, I would need to order 1 more (and not return the remaining one that didn't fit in the glove compartment.
For the courtesy lights on front doors, apparently these are T10 (which is equivalent to 921/912), would the 921s I have work for the these, are they too big? Do these need to be red instead of white even though the cover is already red?
Have I missed any interior lights that could or should be replaced?
FYI, in case it matters, this is a GLS trim and a Canadian model (not sure if anything relevant to this is different from the US model). Also, the mechanic already replaced the headlights with LEDs, but rear brake lights (all 3) and license plate lights are still halogen/incandescent, but they aren't as critical, though some of the interior lights aren't critical to change either to be honest.
Thanks in advance for any and all help, it's much appreciated.
