I own a Taurus Raging Hunter in 460 S&W Magnum. I am taking it with me to Alaska and I want to use it for both protection outdoors and for hunting purposes. I also bought a used Savage model 110 in .338 win mag (which will also basically be welded to me at the hip) but I do have a fondness for wheel guns. Also, I am considering also getting either a big horn armory model 90 (in 460 S&W Mag) or a Rossi R92 (in 454 Casull).
Basically my question is this: I am able to fire various 45 caliber rounds through my Taurus (The ones I would most easily be able to get my hands on being: 45 ACP, 45 Long Colt, 454 casull, & the 460 S&W Mag). The problem is, I don't really know what to use for what. I know that the 460 S&W Mag is really only practical for bear defense [even though the 454 casull would probably be more practical]. The 454 Casull would be decent for game like elk, moose, and maybe deer. Finally, the 45 Long Colt would be decent enough against a deer, wolf, and (possibly???) a Dall Sheep (honestly that one is more of a guess).
What should I use for what animals? (My main concern are the big 5 of Alaska: Grizzly, Moose, Wolves, Dall Sheep, and Caribou).
I am open to suggestions, questions, and criticisms.
