Komugi and Mereum

I'm rewatching the Chinera Ant Arc right now, and I was curious about Komugi's age because Pitou always refers to her as a woman. I thought she was a child; so I looked it up, and some disturbing information was found; apparently, she's 16, but the disturbing part is that apparently she's Mereums love interest?? When did that become canon? I've read the entirety of the manga and seen the whole series; did I just not pick up on that or something?
