Nmap Error (No Targets Specified)

I'm getting this error whenever I try to perform a scan:

sudo nmap -oA scanme.nmap.org

Starting Nmap 7.91 ( https://nmap.org ) at 2021-06-15 20:28 EDT

WARNING: No targets were specified, so 0 hosts scanned.

Nmap done: 0 IP addresses (0 hosts up) scanned in 0.71 seconds.

Originally I thought it was my proxychain when I had this error. The only other time I've tried to perform a scan was when connected to one of hackthebox's VPN's and it did work. Do I need an external wifi adapter? I'm running the newest version of Kali Linux through VirtualBox. I know that to do any wifi scans an adapter is needed, which I need to purchase anyway, so is that the issue?
