Limits of somatic fusion?

Post Body
I have heard that protoplast fusion can combine the DNA of distantly related plants in order to produce a new plant. My question is how distantly related do they have to be? Could you combine an onion and a garlic plant together to get an odd vegetable? What about sunflowers and beans? What are the limits of this technique? Could I, for example, combine 64 different angiosperms and get a viable plant from it? Assuming I have the appropriate equipment to do so.
