Best advice for a new riding instructor?

Post Body

I’ve been riding for over 20 years and just got hired at a hunter/jumper barn teaching lessons 3 nights a week. I have probably 20 unique students ages 4-65, with levels ranging from first time on a horse to showing 2’9”-3’ courses.

Everyone seems happy with me for the most part but I got a complaint this week from a mom that my lessons were too hard for her kid and she has been scared to come the whole time she’s been taking lessons with me (2 months) and now I’m questioning myself.

If you’ve taken lessons, or if you’ve ever taught lessons, what are your favorite words of wisdom or stuff you wish you had known or done?
