Yes, she’s a mammoth donkey. My flair is “mule” because they don’t have “longears” as an option :)
Yes, she’s only a yearling! It’s pretty cool.
We ranch (we have a few hundred head of mama cows) — longears aren’t all good protectors. We had a mule rip a newborn calf from its mother and def it around until we could get them apart. Longears can be quite savage, not just towards coyotes and such but towards the livestock too.
It’s a bit of an unfortunate myth. Sure, there’s some out there that are good at it, but more often than not it’s lonely solo donkeys that end up laminitic and obese from eating feed meant for cattle, or shipped outta there for killing the family dog or a calf. They rarely get handled. Some in wolf and cougar country are killed.
Donkeys are worth so much more. I’m gonna make this girl into a cart and a saddle donk! ❤️☺️
Slower, lol. Lots of folks ride them, I rode my jack exclusively when I was pregnant because he’s so quiet.
They’re a little slower, a little more thoughtful, and I’d never choose a donkey if I had to just get a job done. But for leisure, fun and safety they get an a plus.
They’re hard to fit gear to though.
