Housing a mule with companion

Post Body

I'm really wanting a mule for my homestead, mostly just for trail riding. I don't have other horses here, we have plans to get a goat or 2 but other than that I'm not sure what would be a good mix to keep it company. We were thinking a miniature or a donkey or a mix of both, possibly just 2 mules if that easiest too. Hoping to only have 1 companion if possible. The companion wouldn't be doing too much around the farm other than keeping the mule happy. Just weighing options for now I thought I'd ask people see what your experiences have been like. Want to make sure the mule is mentally satisfied without having to get a whole other horse. Would only 1 mini/donkey be good with a mule? Don't want the one left behind getting too upset either. Trying to get the cheapest option while keeping everyone happy

Just a heads up… mules aren’t easy.

They don’t tend to house well with smaller animals. Our mules have killed newborn calves, a dog, an unfortunate mangey coyote, chickens and would with more likelihood than i am comfortable with, kill goats or anything smaller than them, like a mini pony or a donkey, I would never ever trust them together. And these guys have/had 100s of acres and a job to do as well as multiple horse/longear companions.

Why do you want a mule specifically? Are you planning on using them with some regularity? Handling them? There’s nothing more unruly than a (particularly young) mule who has nothing else to do. They will wreck fences. They will cause havoc. They’ll be a PITA for farrier work and finding a farrier to handle them. They take double the drugs for any major medical event to sedate them. Their dietary needs are different to a horse or even a donk. Mules play so damn rough with their friends, causing some pretty significant damage to horses who will tolerate/engage them. This is partly why they kill things - they just play too rough. Our mule and mammoth donk will literally body slam one another to the ground, it’s horrifying to watch 😅 There’s a video floating around right now on Facebook of a mini donkey trying to kill a goat it had been housed with since the goat was born. Saddle fit is a PITA unless you luck out on a mule with a good wither and some rock to their back (when in motion). Mules tend to get really buddy sour, particularly to mares.

Really good, quiet, uncomplicated mules aren’t cheap. (canyon mule sales just happened, average $$ was $11k topped at 55k) If you’re really set on one that won’t make your life too difficult, think about finding a senior who is on the slow down. Make sure you get along with them really, really well.

Basically think this one over very thoroughly. Mules are awesome, but they are far from simple and far from horses. It’s a real effort to keep everyone sound and happy with mules around lol.
