This mare is 4yo and is a Fresian x Percheron cross that we have had since late summer 2023. She has always been a solid black bay/seal bay but since spring has begun she has had white hairs popping up all over her body behind the shoulder/chest. She isnât papered and I never saw the dam and sire so idk what they looked like. Definitely not ill fitting tack as they are even where tack doesnât touch so Iâm wondering if sheâs turning roan; itâs just that 4yo seems a bit old to be making a coat/color change unless they are a grey or roan. Anyone else had a horse change coat color after 2yo that wasnât already clearly roan or grey?
Yes it is, the first sign of true roan would have been at first foal shed (and one parent would have to be roan to pass it on.)
This just looks like white ticking. This horse would not test positive for roan.
I have a mule (no roan parentage) who has some progressive white ticking as he ages too, primarily flank, belly and the sides of his neck. It isnât rabicano. I donât know if they have discovered the âreasonsâ for ticking yet.

Not all of them (grey exists in them, but most commonly in NA they are black) â this horse doesnât show any signs of greying.
