Trailering help
Post Body

I'm moving my horse to a new barn this week, my horse will be in the trailer for 15 minutes max, probably more like 5-10. He's in rehab from a minor tendon injury (vet approved moving barns). My vet gave me some ace, they instructed 3ccs an hour before the trip if I want to use it.

One of my vets cautioned against using the ace unless I really need it because of the negative effects it can have on male horses, but the other didn't seem concerned.

Also, should I use shipping boots? Don't want him to hurt his leg. He's very well behaved with trailers, I would rather just err on the safe side, but I know boots can trap heat in the legs, so I'm torn.

I'm new to the trailering process (barn owner picking him up with her trailer as I don't have one), so would appreciate some advice :)

So:

  1. Should I sedate for the ride?
  2. Should I boot? (shipping boots, tendon boots, wraps?)

Comments

I would not sedate. It's a 15 minute trip. Imo it's better he's alert to travel.

Boots are up to you. 15 minutes I wouldn't be worried about trapped heat. That's more of a concern with several hour long trips.
