I'm moving my 8yro ottb mare from a boarding facility to the barn that I work at. I'm getting a good deal on board here and I just have to bring my own grain. The grain she's currently on is some generic grain that she's lost a little weight on (there's other factors in play too such as not having pasture access๐ and they only feed two flakes of hay at each meal unless you want to pay extra for more). I'm currently trying to decide between Purina Ultium or Purina Impact to try and help her get weight back on. I'm leaning towards ultium since it has the amplify but a friend suggested the impact. Anyone have some suggestions?
UGA has a free webinar series on horse nutrition, going through some of the 2023 videos might help you make your decision.
Personally I don't think either is a bad choice, if you need extra calories with the Impact you can add a fat supplement like cool calories (or some people just use straight oil). Compare the costs before doing that, I don't have that info available to me. I have a feeling more hay will be the most helpful thing here assuming your horse is otherwise normal/healthy.
