I've been staying at a residence where there is a mare fenced in front. It is alone, and the last time I saw people bringing feed was three days ago. There is no pasture available, as you can see in the pictures. The only shelter she has is the roof shown in one of the pictures. I observed her eating her feces yesterday, and I'm unsure if this behavior is common. I do not know how normal it is that she hasn't been fed in days. Based on these observations and the pictures, can you determine if she is in poor health?
UPDATE: We called the vet again and they said they came see the horse today and called the owner (they have a registry). They said the horse is 30 yo and is not doing great but also not doing awfully. Considering what you all have commented, I don't think they realize how serious it is.
The vet said they will arrange with the owner to see if they can put the mare indoors through the winter and what else can be done to improve the situation. We reiterated that the mare has no water and hay/forage accessible throughout the day and they just acknowledged but said they will deal with it with the owner.
We feel a bit disappointed and powerless because these vet was referred by the authorities after we called the local police so we don't know who else could help.
