Bit advice?

Post Body

I posted this in a bit FB group but I’m looking for as much knowledgeable feedback as I can get. History- I learned to ride about 12 years ago as an adult and I have A LOT to learn still. I got this mare about 5 months ago from a questionable trail riding farm selling her off because she didn’t “fit their program”

Anyway, I really like her and we get along great. Now that she’s had some groceries and farrier and vet care we are ready to start really training and conditioning for next season’s judged trail rides.

My question is are we using the correct bit?

In the photo is the bit she came with(I had to buy it) I use a direct rein most of the time and she goes well in this.

It may be more than my experience level needs. I want to improve her training and softness not revert it.

Should I continue with this or is there something kinder I should be using?

If there is what and why?

I see you've commented a couple times asking for a SPECIFIC alternative and no one is giving you one so here is what I would try:

Very similar mouthpiece, won't break the bank, but doesn't have the sweet iron

Has the sweet iron but is out of stock :( I have the low port/tongue relief version of this same bit and my horse goes very well in it!

This mouthpiece is generally regarded as being kind to the horse, so a snaffle version of your current bit is a good choice
