He just turned 15 on Monday. He has always been a smaller kid, until very recently. Now he is a little above average. I’m 6’5” and his mom is 5’10”. He is a hair over 5’10”. I’ve coached him since he was 3. He has always been one of the top players in the league if not the best. But he had warning track power. I’ve seriously lost count of the amount of balls he hits off the top of the fence. Whether it was the 5’ tall little league fence. Or the 20’ tall fence on his freshman field. Last year as a freshman he lead his team in extra base hits. The varsity coach mentioned he wanted to see him put on some size this summer. So we decided to take the summer off from our travel team and just bulk up. He was 137 lbs. I created a program for him. 5 days a week. Yoga in the morning, followed with lifting. Afternoons were his. Then evenings he worked a heavy ball, battle ropes, jump rope, and explosion drills. Not to mention a 4-5000 calorie diet with 150 grams of protein a day. He put 18 lbs on over summer.
We just rejoined our team and he was frustrated. Played 2 games and had 4 at bats. He looked rusty. As anyone would. Of course he is blaming me. We took too much time off, now I’m behind. His mom was putting shit in his head too. But I guess that’s why we are divorced. Today was our first tournament back. His first AB he launched a foul ball over the fence about 375 feet. Ends up with a jam job falling in for a single and knocking in 2 RBI’s. Second ab I felt something was going to happen. He hits one off the end of his bat just over the left center fence. I was coaching 1st when it happened. The base umpire comes to me and says shit man he didn’t even fully barrel that one either! This time last year full barrels didn’t have enough juice to get out.
Proud dad moment. I know this is the first of many. But damn feels good to finally see it happen. Also it’s nice for him to see results so quickly after a summer of hard work. Okay gotta go. 8am game tomorrow. Fucking finish with the 3 seed in the gold bracket and still have to play at 8am. Bullshit!!
