Hey all, I posted a while ago asking for tips for a new coach. I’m back after getting the official nod for rec league first year kid pitch. I have a few questions if yall don’t mind helping me out.
1) I plan on sending an initial email introducing myself to the parents, letting them know practice time, ect ect. How would you go about wording a reminder to parents that this is just a rec league game and it’s not THAT serious and that we need to let the kids play and let me coach? I say let me coach because I’m worried about parents chirping at practice more than just encouraging and cheering. We had a parent on my son’s team take his kid off the team after being demonstrative at practice.
2) as of right now, we have ONE practice a week for one hour. I scheduled mine at Fridays at 5 thinking it would stick with kids the next day for games. What kind of supplemental practice or team activities would you suggest? I looked into renting a field and the local high school is 10hr but you need liability insurance. The batting cages only limit 2 per person for half an hour of rental time. I’m not sure what to do other than a lot of offense and defense practice to get reps rather than very much situational type stuff just because we have very little time. I’m not even going to really be able to evaluate kids very much to put them in the best positions to succeed. I feel bummed about the time we have.
3) how do I pick/ask for assistant coaches?
