Just got a hydrometer, but I'm not sure about these levels

At the tip we have 1.00 and in yellow says bottle. This is the level at which water is at.

At around 40, we have a pink region wich says start beer and between approx 50 and 90 we have a blue region for wine.

Are these markings supposed to represent decimals? For example, if it said 40 in my hydrometer, does that mean it's 1.04? The scale doesn't appear to be indepth numerically speaking and now I'm confused as to what I'm supposed to actually be looking for on this thing...
