So I've washed yeast before with decent results. But there was always a large amount of dead yeast in the jar compared to the light layer that we really want. I decided it wasn’t worth the hassle for strains I have easy access to.
Fast forward a year or so and I'm using a SS Brewtech BrewBucket, currently containing a NEIPA using Wyeast 1318. I decided to try top cropping for the first time as Wyeast is very difficult to come by locally for me. The process couldn't be easier. Sanitize stainless measuring cup and mason jar, fill jar with krausen pudding, add distilled water, refrigerate. Apparently it worked pretty well. Pic: Imgur
Not sure if I want to decant and divide the jar contents or keep it as-is and pitch all the yeast into the next batch. If I fill a White Labs vial with 45 ml, how would I best estimate the number of live cells? On the other hand, if I didn’t divide it up, does that seem like a ridiculous amount (~150ml) to pitch into 6 gal of 1.080 wort? I’m open to any better ideas too..
