Internet Comes in as a RJ45 cable…How best to set up?

Post Body
Just moved into a split-level home and the internet comes into the house as a straight Ethernet/RJ45 cable.
The problem is I only have about 6’ of cable coming out of the floor, severely limiting router placement.
Would it be a good idea just to buy a female-to-female Ethernet extender and place the router where I want? As I understand putting a switch before the router would be a bad idea.
