Apologies if some of these questions seem basic, and I'm probably making this more into a problem that's rather simple, and some of the questions to do with networking and some branch out.

I have a server tower around: Intel Xeon 1226v3 , 32gb ram, 500gb SSD, 8tb Mechanical drive storage, 2x 1gb ethernet ports. It only has VGA and no PCI express slots (Fujitsu server).

Currently I put media on a flash drive and into the TVs to watch. However the TVs don't support x265 only 264. My house is somewhat a WiFi dead zone therefore I use Powerline adapter which provide my internet's full speed easily. 80up and 20 down to clarify and I tend to use ethernet from these adapters rather than the WiFi.

My TV are not smart they just have 2x hdmi 1x vga and usb, and ethernet ports with Roku boxes attached. So my questions are:

  1. From a media server perspective I'm happy to browser folders to find what I want should I do a bare metal install or windows or Linux? Or use VMs and load it up with other things that could be beneficial? I'm open to what others have done.

  2. TV with VGA and HDMI, but only vga on the pc with no GPU, what are my options. Direct connect to the media box but how would sound transmit, vga doesn't do that does it? If I'm doing it remotely is there an option without it being a smart TV and just a Roku box?

  3. If my Powerline network is solid, and reliable, will transferring files using sftp or a network share provide good speeds on the local lan?

  4. I'm sure I'm missing something here but by all means add any comments or helpful wisdom.
