Need help determining if I should get a new consumer level router or not. 5Ghz speeds slowing down randomly...

Post Body

  1. My current router is a Netgear Nighthawk AC1900.

  2. No I don't want Ubiquity

The Problem: My current problem that I am having is my 5Ghz band is slowing down to a crawl sometimes randomly and I am not sure why.

  • My internet speeds are 300mbps through Charter/Spectrum. It usually goes closer to 400mbps though..

  • My 5ghz channel is set to 161 which tested to be the fastest for me wirelessly. I live in a one story villa with only a few walls between the router and most devices.

  • My router has the feature to link the 2.4ghz and 5ghz together under one SSID, however, I did not do that as it tests slower which is annoying.

  • I have tested DNS in my Area and I am now using 1.1.1.1 as main and 9.9.9.9 as backup.

  • I mainly have a chromecast, SmartTv, 2 cell phones, a laptop, PS4, and Blink security cams (2 of them) connected to the wireless.

The Question: What router do you guys recommend getting, if any, for my place. Or is it just a matter of changing options on mine and fixing it? I have had my router for a few years now.

Would the Asus routers be faster/better?

Looking to spend ~200

BONUS QUESTION - Should I buy my own modem to use with my Charter/Spectrum 300mbps Internet? If so, which one?
