Update: I just moved the desktop out of the room in question before running a speedtest. The speeds were horrendous with a download of 0.65mbps and an upload of 0.44mbps. I moved the desktop a few feet into the den and a variety of things have changed. I am able to connect to the 5ghz band with no issue, as well as the 2.4. I ran a speedtest and am getting 21.84mbps download and 11.97mbps upload which is a dramatic increase. We are paying for 100mbps on our service, but I think this is a clear case of the router/modem combo we have gotten installed just not being good enough. That being said does anyone have any suggestions for routers/modems that will help nip this issue in the bud?
Hi everyone, recently our household has switched from AT&T internet to the spectrum 100mbps service which came with a Arris DG1670 Router. This router has 2.4 and 5ghz bands, but they run independent of each other, from my (small) knowledge however I am under the impression that these bands are supposed to run simultaniously while switching devices between the two when necessary. So far the only thing that has happened with the dual bands is that the 2.4ghz band is the only one I can connect to. Both bands have different ID's, and yet when attempting to connect to the 5ghz I simply get a notification stating either I simply "cant connect to the network" or I have entered "the incorrect key", originally both bands had the same key so I changed the 5ghz to be sure that was not causing any issues, and still had the same problem.
Also when we were under the AT&T service which was 75mbps things ran smoothly aside from when multiple devices were running on the network at once. The current router however is slow under almost any circumstances, and frequently drops connection, and upon reconnecting I am greeted with the network status of "secure, no internet connection" (usually for a brief time until the connection returns, but in some cases for an extended amount of time before disconnecting and reconnecting solves the issue). I thought that this was a widespread problem, but to my surprise I seem to be the only one having these issues. My phone and various other devices are able to pick up and connect to the 5ghz band without any issue, and this is through both password iterations as well. I am wondering if this could be due to my location in the house which is the farthest possible distance away from the router. The only issue that affects every device, is the bands not switching automatically.
I am using a feeble Trendnet AC1200 dual band adapter (Model TEW-805UB/A), and have not overlooked the possibility that it may be the cause of some of these issues, but to not be able to connect to the 5ghz band at all even when using a dual band adapter seems odd. To be safe I even uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, but to no avail. Previously when troubleshooting the "secure, no internet connection" network status windows prompted me with the issue being that the wifi adapter did not "have a valid IP configuration", I was eventually able to fix this by doing a network reset within the windows setting menu, but cant say for sure if this is a permanent solution or not. I am currently on a Desktop which was built, and plan on getting a far better wifi card in the near future, but am curious if this will help solve any of the aforementioned issues. I am also looking into investing in another router to replace the terrible model we currently have, but would only like to do so if it will aid in making things better.
Currently I am running Windows 10 Pro 64-bit version 1607. Various hardware I can provide if necessary, but I dont think it would be something worth mentioning unless asked. I apologize for the lengthy post, but I wanted to make sure to get every bit of information out while I still am able to type at my keyboard ha ha. In any case I hope someone could provide me with helpful knowledge and information on how to end this home networking nightmare.
