So we had an unexpected event of water damage on the ceiling of our first story. I got a text from my spouse on my way home from work saying the ceiling in the office was bowing down and water was dripping. Dang. So long story short there was some type of leak coming from a second story bathroom. When I got home I went to check it out, came from inside the wall. Great. Shut off the water. Poked a whole in the ever growing bubble on the ceiling with a trust 5 gallon bucket underneath and holy crap I got sprayed with water. Jumped out of the way and the water became a steady stream directly into the bucket below. Filled the bucket TWICE before pittering out to a slow drip drop.
Next day get my now favorite demo guys to come out because this is the second event of major water damage caused by former ownerâs stupidity (with this one trick, your insurance company can hate you too!!!). Iâm all about doing renovations myself but Iâll leave the demolition and mold treatment to the professionals.
About an hour into their sawing and vacuuming I hear chuckling. Tech comes down and goes âuhhh can I show you something?â I go up to the bathroom and he says âwhoever you guys use as a plumber should probably not be hired againâ and I of course respond with âwhy good sir I have not had a plumber come to our house that we purchased 9 months ago. Whatever makes you say that?â Low and behold this dude used his freaking plastic bags from his shark-bite couplers instead of galvanized tube straps or hangers to hold up the water lines which are just Haphazardly hanging in the wall, well we go to check and looks like in between my 6 year old getting things in and out of the cabinet the pipes had been moving up and down enough for the coupling to break and spring a leak. All because some plumber was too cheap to go to a big box store and drop 3$ on tube straps or even just buy some steel tube hanger tape to mount the pipes properly. So Now I get a bathroom Reno and an office Reno to deal with. And get to redo this shotty plumbing work myself.
On an aside: do any of the professional plumbers out there use shark bite couplers? Or do you solder your own connections? I was taught to solder (though Iâm no professional) and maybe itâs the old school mentality that was beaten into me at a young age, but I was always taught to do things the original ways and skip on the âgimmicksâ. But Iâve never personally used the shark-bite so I have no clue if itâs even a âgimmickâ.
TL:DR: Donât use a plastic bag as a pipe hanger for plumbing you garish dolt.
