Drywall peeled off with painter's tape. How to prep before painting so I don't see the edges?
Post Body

Hello everybody. I painted the ceiling of my bathroom. When I went to peel the tape from the walls, it brought a layer of old paint and what I think is the top paper layer of drywall with it. Originally I thought the previous owner had painted over wallpaper and that was coming off with the paint... however after making my way around the room it seems as though the paint was just peeling off.

I spoke with a handyman to get some insight on what I might be able to do to prep the surface before painting. He told me that "if I can feel it before painting, you're going to see if after painting." I asked him what he would do and he suggested lightly sanding the edges. Well, I sanded the edges but I can still feel them and with his words of wisdom ringing in my ears, I'm afraid to start painting because I really don't want to ever see these edges again.

Any tips on how to get rid of these edges? Some things I've been considering are... more sanding, using a primer before painting, or applying a thin layer of drywall compound, followed by sanding.

Obviously, I REALLY DON'T WANT TO USE COMPOUND since it's a pain in the ass but I'm just wondering if this is the only way to guarantee I won't see the edges.

Edit: Almost forgot the pictures. https://imgur.com/a/axhXuNf
