Puppy chew damage to stair tread

Can anyone tell me if this can be repaired without pulling up the carpet, removing the banaster post, and replacing the entire tread? Matching the staining and style would also be labor intensive, adding to the cost if I have to contract it out.
Really hoping someone has an easy DIY solution to this.
