Just got off the phone with an electrician. I want to install a hot tub and know I need a new 200 amp electrical panel. My question is, he said I need to also upgrade the panel outside the house where the wires enter the home. That doubles the cost. Is this normal? Sounds logical but I couldn’t find anything online discussing the need to replace both. Thoughts?
Update. I sent a pic to the electrician and this was his reply: It looks you have a 120/240 V ,100 A electrical service. the outside part of the electrical service is rated 100 A. You can leave it like this, replace the interior electrical panel with a 30 position electrical panel that will give you space for 50 A breaker. In today's practice 100 A electrical service is not really appropriate for a 2 level house
