Concrete Basement Floor

I want to flatten/fix my basement floor which has pits and dings in it. It also has at least 2 layers of paint on it and nothing is level. I don't need it to be level but just flat. Do I just grind the paint off and mix up a bunch of floor leveler and spread it out until it finds its own level? Am I missing anything?
