I have a deck and I want stairs to the concrete pad 128” below. I am open to spiral or straight stairs. I have contacted a couple of local contractors- one keeps dodging me, and the other said it was going to be outside the scope of his skills. I can’t find many other options. I could probably build some myself as I have some decent carpentry skills, though I haven’t ever done something like this where precision and load-bearing etc are important, and where local codes are important. Those aspects make me nervous. There are spiral stair companies (such as Paragon) who will sell me a kit- but while less ideal to me than a straight staircase, they are quoting around $8k, which is more than I expected for a straight staircase made with pressure-treated stringers and covered with composite components. Either way, the existing metal railing will require being cut, and that’s beyond my skill and the skill of the contractors I found.
What ideas do you people here think would be a good route to go?
