It has a gas or a liquid in a pocket. Once it reaches a temp that is only achievable if there were a fire in the room it will pop l/burst/expand and send an output to a fire system.

*forgot to mention it will only do this if your fire system is being monitored by a local or national fire monitoring service. Otherwise it'll just trip an alarm. Unless the system is very old, or not powered on, or for some reason or another is turned off which happens at more than you would think.
