Can't see player character on Steam Deck

I just started Hollow Knight for the first time ever. Trying to play it on my steam deck but my character doesn't appear on screen. I can still move him and attack and stuff, the sprite just isn't there.
I've tried proton experimental and the latest stable. I've also tried -force-opengl as well but none of this has worked. In fact force opengl just crashed on startup.
Any ideas on how to fix it?
