Scenario:
1) Women achieved equality before the American Revolution.
2) Therefore, when the Constitution was written, the assumption was that there wouldn't be a Vice President and President, but rather a Co-Presidential Couple. The idea passes muster (they're used to royal couples) and that's how it goes to this day. A Vice President is only chosen by the surviving spouse or single person when needed (theoretically of either gender, but the tradition was always opposite gender until the recent gay rights movement).
