You’ll have to excuse my less than stellar knowledge of American history. But, the Presidential Election of 1876 was seen as one of the most controversial of the 19th century. It saw Democrat Samuel Tilden win the popular vote Republican Rutherford Hayes barely scraping by the electoral college. To finally determine the outcome, a committee was held, the result of which being that Hayes would become president, but the era of Reconstruction would come to an end. So, what if Tilden was decided to be victorious? Could this see the continuation of Reconstruction, or would it end either way? How would this affect the progress of American history?
