Episode 4 of The Siècle, my podcast about France 1814-1914, is now out! "The Paradox of Paris" takes listeners on a tour of Paris under the Bourbon Restoration, a city marked by intense contradictions, contentious public monuments, and the original burgeoning restaurant scene, where grand palaces and squalid slums exist side-by-side and Paris is surrounded not by suburban sprawl but by suburban farms, growing the food to feed the city of 700,000 people.
