It's the height of the 1932-33 ashes cricket series, which would later be known as the infamous "Bodyline" tour. As always, there are variations on the tale however it is certain that it took place, though the witty respondent is up for debate.
Douglas Jardine had appeared at the door of the Australian dressing room, objecting that he had heard himself described as a "bastard" on the field. Vic Richardson, the vice-captain, turned to his team. "All right, which one of you bastards called this bastard a bastard?"
While Australia may have won the sledging England went on to win the series 4-1 and retain the Ashes.
