President Washington sat in his office in Federal Hall, sitting across from him was Secretary of Foreign Affairs, John Jay who had recently given the President a report, informing him of the Venetian diplomat that was waiting for a meeting with him, various Creek and Cree tribe leaders currently in New York that would do business with none other than the "Big Man" of the US, and finally of the growing tension in the Northwest Territory, that Governor St. Clair should be taking care of now a treaty he was negotiating. Upon hearing of the situation in the Northwest Territory, Washington gave a sigh and leaned back in his chair, saying "My friend, I dare think this will not be the last time we hear of troubles with the natives in the Northwest. If I had my way, we would join with them as brothers, showing them of the ways that we have developed to ease our lives, and have them peacefully join in our grand Republic with their lands intact. However, our citizens see them only as savages, and therefore are rightful to take their land, and thus the natives retaliate against us. Unless we take action, this cycle of violence shall continue, until the end times."
Jay hummed his agreement, steepling his fingers on the desk in front of him and resting his chin upon them, responding "Yes, Mr. President. However how will we convince this Confederation to come to the table willingly? They have an ample supply of powder and arms thanks to the redcoats in the north. I don't know about you, Mr. President but if we had an endless supply of arms during our war, I would have advocated to fight until we had won, and I imagine the natives think the same."
Washington nodded his ascent, and after a moment, a slight twinkle entered his eye, as he straightened in his chair he said "Yes...yes you may be onto something Mr. Jay! The English continue to supply the natives on our frontier, however what if they could be persuaded to halt such a practice? We also have various disputes lingering with them from the Treaty of Paris, both over the Royal Navy's kidnapping of slaves in the south, to the forts that are in the Northwest Territory that remain in British hands. Why, we could take two birds with one stone, securing peace on our frontier, while also gaining recompense from these past measures. Secretary Jay, there is none I could trust to ensure a steady treaty is established but yourself. I must ask you, will you agree?"
Jay deliberated for a moment, he had felt the weight of his duties as Secretary of Foreign Affairs weighing on him for a while now, though this may be a good way to retire from his position on a good note. Perhaps he could return to his legal practice, enjoying time with Sarah, and connecting more with poor Peter and Anna. Yes, that sounded good. He informed the President of his condition, of this being his last major act as Secretary of Foreign Affairs, and that he would resign soon thereafter. Following the meeting, he resolved to stop by the home of his dear friend Hamilton, he only hoped the man hadn't worked himself into a deep slumber again, honestly the man was non-stop sometimes.
A week later, Jay would be on a ship bound for London, carrying diplomatic papers with his luggage, prepared to do business with those who used to be his brothers, with those who used to be his enemies.
