From his diplomatic fervor in Kronborg Castle, Gustav dispatched a letter to his military command in Stockholm. He would form a recruitment drive and expansions to the allotment system. There would be three stages to these military reforms.
- The Caroleans.
- The Gustavean Guard
- Sailors
THE CAROLEANS
One hundred years ago, the best troops in Europe were Swedish. The Caroleans were fearsome on the continent and would have made even the most resilient troops of foreign powers quake and cower in their keeps. A disastrous defeat at the hands of the Russians at Poltava undid nearly half a century of Swedish supremacy. This was not the fault of the Caroleans but rather of an unintelligent and overextended march deep into Russian territory. Ignoring a risky and overextended march deep into Danish territory that Sweden recently managed to pull off, King Gustav III has given the orders to start training a new brigade of Caroleans that will number roughly between 4,000 and 5,000 strong.
To supply this new army, we will surely be able to find military volunteers eager to gain their own glory in war after seeing what Gustav’s armies accomplished in Denmark. Should we not garner enough popular support, however, Gustav has authorized an increase to the allotment system to the sum of 100 men per province, which should be able to provide between 2,000 and 2,500 men.
The new Caroleans will be equipped in similar ways to the ones of old, but rather- they will use weapons according to the technological improvements of the 18th century. They will be armed with muskets and rapiers. The grenadiers will be armed with bayonets for their muskets.
THE GUSTAVEAN GUARD
King Gustav III’s personal armies that had crossed the Öresund with him would henceforth be known as the Gustavean Guard. They will be provided an increased pay and nothing but the best equipment.
Their training will emphasize discipline and an honor to King and God. They will strike fast and true and will be trusted with the most extreme of the King’s missions. They are God’s lightning and his sword.
These men are now the Gustavean Guard, 6,000 strong.
SAILORS
Our fleet is undermanned. We will be running a recruitment drive in Stockholm, Oxelösund, Norrköping, Gotland, Loftahammar, Hallmare, Simpeverp, Kalmar, Mörbylånga, Kristianopel, Lcykeby, Malmö, Ystad, Trelleborg, Helsingborg, and Ängelholm.
Sailors will be encouraged with a promise of increased pay and prestige, riding on the back of the victory in Sjaelland.
